Howard Kornfeld M.D. & Associates is a medical practice specializing in the treatment of addiction, alcoholism, and chronic pain. Howard Kornfeld, M.D. is the Medical Director of the practice and their innovative Recovery Without Walls program.

Every patient’s condition brings its own unique challenge. So it is comforting to know that Dr. Kornfeld is a Board Certified physician in Addiction Medicine, Pain Medicine and Emergency Medicine.

Background

Dr. Kornfeld graduated medical school at Northwestern University in 1975 after completing the honors program in Medical Education from 1968 to 1971.


Certifications

Dr. Kornfeld is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the subspecialty of Pain Medicine with his primary board certification being in Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Kornfeld is a fellow and is certified by examination of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Kornfeld's certification in pain medicine was granted in 2003 and is in collaboration with the American Board of Anesthesiology and is the only certification in pain medicine recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, (ABMS), the nation's official medical certifying body.

Dr. Kornfeld was re-certified in emergency medicine for the second time in 2002 having been previously certified in 1984 and 1993.

Fellowship in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is granted to approximately 200 of the 4,000 members of the society, in recognition of their substantial contribution to the field, and was granted to Dr. Kornfeld in 2003. He was originally certified in 1992 and was re-certified by ASAM in 2002.

Certifications in Pain Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Emergency Medicine are valid for a period of ten years.


AFFILIATION WITH LOCAL MEDICAL CENTERS

Dr. Kornfeld is a member of the medical staff of Marin County Hospital and a medical consultant to the UCSF-Mount Zion Pain Management Center.

He brings his specialized knowledge in the teaching of addiction medicine, as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCSF School of Medicine.

Academic Teaching

Dr. Kornfeld teaches medical students and house staff at the School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as Assistant Clincal Professor in the Department of Medicine. He lectures and consults with the UCSF - Mount Zion Pain Management Program and is a preceptor in the Longitudinal Clinical Experience rotation of junior and senior medical students who rotate through his office.
